Oh, before I forget, I posted a book series review on my blog: The Children of the Sea series by Virginia Kantra.

And now I really should start packing. I've fiddled with the blog logo, laid out a "business" card that I might print up and hand out at SDCC, and chatted on facebook. A friend and I are having the eternal pirates vs. ninjas debate right now. Good times. :D

I'm currently reading Medicine Road by Charles de Lint for review, and I've gotta pick which books will be travelling with me on the San Diego/Oregon trip. We'll be gone for three weeks, so I'll probably have to bring an entire suitcase full of stuff to read, heh.

We got back from New Mexico on Friday and spent yesterday vegging out and doing laundry. We fly out of Dallas tomorrow around 6 pm, and then we're driving from San Diego to Corvallis on Tuesday. I'm going to need a vacation from all these vacations, heh. I did start plotting out some story ideas while we were in New Mexico. I'm taking a creative writing class in the fall in which I'll be writing the first draft of a novel (50,000 words, no editing), so I'm trying to get a head start on it. It's a high fantasy with some connection to the mythologies of the real world. It's still pretty rough at the moment, but I'm hoping to work on it in San Diego. I also wrote a bit more of an X-Men AU fic that I've been kicking around for ages. Good times.

My parents are supposed to be coming over for lunch today, and then Iain and I have to pack. As I'm sitting here at my desk, I just realized that I'm really going to miss being home. I won't miss the nasty hot weather, but I'll miss my house and my bed and my computer and the nice, dual-monitor setup. [sigh] San Diego is going to be great (BTW, if you're going to be at SDCC and want to meet up, email me!), but it's going to be tough to be away from home for so long.

And I fixed my screwup. :D

Someone on my Paranormal Romance group on Goodreads suggested compiling a comprehensive list of protagonists in paranormal romance and urban fantasy, so I decided to get the ball rolling.

We need your help! Head over to this post on my blog to find out how to help add to the list.

And you can actually access the google doc now! Gasp!

2009 books update!

The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book by Bill Watterson
X-Men: Mutant Genesis by Chris Claremont, John Byrne, and Jim Lee
Untouchable by Linda Winstead Jones
There's Treasure Everywhere! by Bill Watterson

2009 Books: 52

As you can see, I'm still re-reading all of those Calvin & Hobbes collections, heh. I posted a quickie review of X-Men: Mutant Genesis here, and a review of Untouchable here. And I'm currently reading Pushing Ice by Alastair Reynolds, though I might give it up and read some more romance. I'm still in the mood for more fluff than serious.

For some strange reason, DownThemAll! refuses to work right in my new Firefox installation. It won't connect to any servers. o_O This is vexing.

politics: feminism
[info]eiluned
I dreamed last night that I was being very nice to Anti-Feminist Boy from work. After I woke up, I lay there for a while, thinking that maybe my subconscious has a point. Maybe I should be nicer to him, despite some of the hateful stuff he spouts and the fact that he spends his time trying to convince everyone around him that third wave feminists are a bunch of man-hating bitches who want everything handed to them on a silver platter.

And then I remembered that my subconscious also spits out dreams about flying hot dogs and snowmobile-riding sloppy joe sandwiches.

Yeah.

Anyhoo, I finally got the Sims 2 to reinstall correctly, and it's now working without crashing, so hooray. I'm going to work on rebuilding my neighborhood. After I make a cup of tea. [yawn]

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons by Bill Watterson
Scientific Progress Goes "Boink" by Bill Watterson
Yukon Ho! by Bill Watterson

2009 Books: 48

Currently reading more Calvin & Hobbes collections because The Forever War was bleak as hell and I need some fluff. I'm trying to decide what novel to read next, but I've been hit by a bad case of apathy. Bleh.

Last night I dreamed I was Obi-Wan Kenobi's sister (damn the luck!). I wasn't a Jedi, but I was Force-sensitive, and we were fighting bad guys, so he gave me a lightsaber. The dream then shifted into a weird thing about hiding from Captain America (who looked like The Flash) in a jewelry store. [info]iamsuffocating, her mom, and a few other people from our department were there with us, and this woman came in and tried to buy a heart charm. We tried to play off like we were supposed to be in the store and told her we didn't have any, we sold out, etc, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. So [info]iamsuffocating sold her her own heart charm for $100 bucks and we finally got rid of her. We were shuffling things around, looking for my lightsaber, when I turned to the door and screamed. Captain America/The Flash was right outside, peering in.

Somehow we convinced him that we were regular old jewelry store employees, and he left. But he had just turned into a flying hot dog and was hovering over the building, trying to spy on us. I saw it (the roof had conveniently become transparent) and told everyone else to shut up because he was still here.

Then the dream shifted back into Star Wars stuff, and Darth Vader was marching the original trilogy crew into the room as prisoners. I finally found my lightsaber, but (THANKS, SUBCONSCIOUS) it was one of those toy ones, where you fling it out and the "blade" telescopes out.

And then I woke up.

I've been having really strange dreams lately.

I'm backing up my files, getting ready to run a system restore on Lucius. Not a full factory restore, just going to go back a few weeks to before he started acting like a complete moron. I think I got hit with some malware or something. It's killing me; I really want to play The Sims, but the game won't even launch now. It had been crashing and I was trying to figure out what in my Downloads folder was screwing it up, but now I can't even get it to start the loading screens. [grinds teeth] I'm going to try to load Civilization IV on Umeko-laptop today; let's all cross our fingers and hope it doesn't explode on me.

Dr. Tiller's Murder
politics: keep congress outta my uterus
[info]eiluned
I'm quoting [info]apocalypsos here, because she said it better than I ever could.

"Every time I try to come up with something intelligent to say about the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, who provided late-term abortions, I have a "Flames ... on the side of my face ..." type of reaction.

So I'll just say this.

If you seriously believe that women are so lazy and stupid as a group that a majority of late-term abortions are done not out of medical necessity but because women just routinely and casually decide they don't want to carry a healthy fetus anymore in the eighth month ... if you honestly believe that a woman should be forced to carry a dead fetus until her body decides to get rid of it, if it doesn't give her an infection and kill her off too ... if you can stand there and tell me with a straight expression that every birth defect and flaw can be caught before the fetus becomes theoretically viable outside of the womb and women just wait to get rid of those fetuses out of laziness ... if you actually think a woman should have to carry a fetus without a face or a fucking brain for weeks if not months knowing full well it'll die immediately after birth ...

Get off my friendslist.

No, seriously, get the fuck away from me.

And I hope you never have to learn why the right to a late-term abortion is so goddamn important."

I finally caught up on my book review backlog! http://www.thediscriminatingfangirl.com/2009/05/31/book-review-bonanza/

* Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione
* Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance
* New Blood by Gail Dayton
* Storm Born by Richelle Mead
* Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
* Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead

Last night, I had a very lengthy and involved dream that I was Jean Grey in an X-Men: First Class sort of setting. We fought this Aztec guy who could make himself invisible with the help of a gift shop worker. Later, Wolverine showed up and asked me about my sexual experience. I surprised him (and the real myself) by confessing that Scott wasn't my first; Warren was. And then we all ran around, jumping off of walls like in the new Prince of Persia game.

WTF, brain.

Iain and I went camping with the family this weekend. Twas fun until it got really hot and humid yesterday, which then wiped us all out. I'm still tired. But we had fun; I did a lot of reading and managed to catch a fish (illegally, I must add; I didn't want to shell out for a license, heh).

Time for a 2009 books update!

X-Men: First Class - Mutant Mayhem by Jeff Parker & Roger Cruz
New Blood by Gail Dayton
Storm Born by Richelle Mead
Nightfall by Isaac Asimov & Robert Silverberg

2009 Books: 41

Currently reading Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, and tomorrow, I'm going to run out and snag a copy of Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead, because I love me some Georgina Kincaid.

And now, I need to force myself to write a couple of book reviews. I'm way behind in my reviewing backlog. I just... can't seem to be able to force myself to do anything constructive today. Maybe I'll go play Spyro the Dragon instead.
